This reminds me of WonderFlex. Probably a very similar substance.

I realise I'm way late to this topic but Jinyo's right. Wonderflex. Varaform is a different name for the same basic thing. I've used it for about 2 years now with great results. I'd recommend it highly.

Comes in sheets, heat it up with a heat gun or hair dryer, form to fit, cool, and you're mostly done. When the Robocop gloves turned out to be impractical, I started over with leather and wonderflex. Here's pics of the unfinished gloves being worn. Regrettably we had to put them into use before they were finished ( ie - had leather put over them to look black and shiny ) but this ends up being fortunate at a time like this since I have pics to at least show any interested party.

In the close-up you can see the porous surface on the fingers. It doesn't look pretty, but it holds its shape great. At least in these pics I can sort of demonstrate ( to those of you who care ) what this would look like and how sturdy it is. I've seen someone's Full Metal Alchemist arm done in the stuff and it looked great! In my case I finished the gloves with a think layer of leather, but others have used car repair putty like Bondo as well.
